Your camera is almost never the problem. Jewellery is hard to shoot because metal is a mirror and stones are prisms — and in the UK, a flattering photo that lies is now a legal liability.
Almost every jeweller who is unhappy with their product photos reaches the same conclusion: they need a better camera. It is almost always wrong. The phone in your pocket has a better sensor than the professional kit of fifteen years ago, and the photographs are still flat, grey and lifeless. The camera was never the bottleneck.
Jewellery is genuinely one of the hardest things there is to photograph, and the reason is physics, not gear. Polished metal is a mirror. A faceted stone is a prism. You are not photographing an object sitting in light — you are photographing light itself, bent and bounced by a surface that shows you the room instead of the ring. Understand that, and the whole problem reorganises itself around what actually matters: not the camera, but what the camera is pointed into.
You're photographing reflections, not metal
Point a phone at a polished band and look at what the metal shows you. It shows the ceiling, the window, your own hands, the grey blur of the room. Metal has almost no colour or tone of its own on camera; it borrows everything from its surroundings. So the amateur mistake is to light the ring. There is nothing there to light. You light the reflection — the environment the metal has no choice but to mirror back.
This is why the same piece looks like scrap in one shot and jewellery in the next with no change of camera. In the good shot, the metal reflects a large, clean, graduated light source; in the bad one, a cluttered room and a hard little highlight from a bare bulb. Diffusion is most of the job
The single biggest jump in quality comes from diffusion — putting something translucent between the light and the piece so the light arrives soft and broad rather than hard and pinpoint. Soft light wraps around curved metal and reads as a smooth gradient from bright to dark, which is what the eye interprets as polished. Sparkle needs the opposite of soft

Get the metal colour right, or don't bother
Nothing generates returns like metal colour that lies. Yellow, white and rose gold are the entire proposition, and the camera will happily render all three wrong. The usual culprit is mixed light — daylight from a window plus a warm bulb plus a phone screen — which no white balance can untangle. Yellow gold goes green, white gold goes grey-blue, rose gold loses its blush.
The fixes are unglamorous and they work. Use one type of light source, not three. Set a custom white balance against a grey or white card. Photograph the piece on a hand or ear so the eye has something human to scale against, and keep at least one image with honest, non-macro framing. A ruler or a familiar object in a supporting shot is not too literal for higher-value pieces; it is reassurance. Consistency beats the occasional brilliant shot

When each shot is a different background, distance and colour temperature, it reads as a jumble — even if every individual photo is technically fine. Build a repeatable setup and mark where everything goes: the same board, the same camera height, the same light positions. Boring is the point. Consistency is a trust signal that no single beautiful photograph can buy.
The line between editing and lying
Some editing is not just allowed, it is expected. Removing a speck of dust, correcting white balance so the metal is the colour it actually is, cleaning the background, straightening the crop — all fine. These make the photo more accurate, not less.
Cross a line, though, and it stops being retouching and becomes misrepresentation with real legal exposure. Deepening a stone's colour, editing out inclusions the buyer will see in the box, faking a metal tone, boosting sparkle that isn't there — these change what the customer thinks they are buying. Honesty is partly a matter of turning that off.

Do not try to become a photographer for the whole catalogue. Spend your effort building one reliable, repeatable in-house setup for everyday web images — consistent, accurate, honest — because that is high-volume, needs to stay on-brand, and cannot wait on a third party.
